MAC is pleased to welcome our newest member, the Melanoma Foundation of New England. MFNE was founded in 1999 by Mel and Marilyn Rubin in memory of their son Mark who lost his battle with melanoma. MFNE’s mission is to reduce the incidence of melanoma in the New England region. We provide a variety of educational programs targeting the prevention and early detection of skin cancer and melanoma for both children and adults. MFNE also assists patients and their caregivers struggling with melanoma by offering support groups, educational programs, and Billy’s Buddies, a one-on-one patient advocacy and support program. These programs are all free. A Medical Advisory Board and Board of Directors comprised of business people, health care professionals, and leading melanoma specialists provide guidance to MFNE. Our fundraising events provide funding for education and support programs aimed at prevention, early detection and support.

This semester I have the pleasure of teaching the course Conference and Event Planning at MassBay Community College. As part of a class project, the students are planning all facets of an event. They have elected to host a Wellness Fair which will take place in the Student Dining Area/Lounge on Wednesday, April 17th from noon to 2 pm on the Wellesley campus. The students are responsible for obtaining sponsorship, marketing the event, designing the room layout, creating a catering menu, writing a budget and staffing the event.

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm on Wednesdays is a common hour and no classes are slated during this time. There will be raffle and door prizes. Thus, the class expects a large turnout of students, faculty, and staff.

The goal of the Wellness Fair is to educate the guests on alternative ways to promote healthy living habits. The vendors we have selected will emphasize spiritual, physical, and mental well- being. The complimentary tables will allow vendors to conduct demos and display literature. Guests will have an opportunity to ask questions of the vendor representatives.

We are hoping you will join us on the 17th as a vendor. It is so important that young and old think seriously about the damage the sun and other elements can due to one’s skin and the precautions needed to prevent disease.

Please let me know if you have staff available on the 17th to join us at the Wellness Fair. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,
Roberta Allison,
Associate Professor
