Best Day Ever Skin Cancer Awareness

Picture

Best Day Ever Skin Cancer Awareness, Ltd, better known as #shamelesslysunsafe, was started by Licensed Massage Therapist & melanoma patient Amanda Halverstadt McDaniel, BCTMB. Their goal is to spread awareness in any way possible, but to especially focus on client centered professions  where skin is viewed. Hairstylists, estheticians, nail techs, tattoo artists, and massage therapists all have an opportunity to recognize the indicators of skin cancers on clients, and should be trained appropriately on how to effectively communicate any concerns. Because any type of diagnostic comment is beyond their scope of practice, these service providers most often shy from learning in depth about skin cancer, or even discussing it with clients.
#Shamelesslysunsafe has already teamed up with a massage therapy school, and developed a physician approved course & protocol that has been approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB). Massage Therapists can take their  career specific course and earn approved continuing education hours.

Miggy's Gift

Picture
Miggy’s Gift is a non-profit organization founded in March, 2018 in loving memory of Stephen D. Chavez, who at the young age of 29 lost his battle to Metastatic Stage 4 Melanoma Cancer.  Stephen, who was also known by his friends as “Miggy”, was a fun and loving young man who lived his life passionately and fiercely. He was the middle child with an older sister and younger brother.  Stephen graduated with a degree in Video Game Development and Design and his instinct to help others blended with his passion for video games.  He organized a video game tournament in Miami called Florida Lan (Flan). Gamers flew from across the country to attend the two-day event.  All the money raised was donated to an organization that provides video consoles and games to pediatric hospitals and homeless shelters.  Soon after his diagnosis, during his stay in the hospital, it didn’t take long for him to notice how poorly designed the hospital gowns were for patients receiving infusion treatment.  In true Stephen fashion, along with his passion to help kids, Stephen started designing a super hero inspired gown for pediatric cancer patients.  Unknowingly, he had planted the seed for what would later become his legacy.

Our mission at Miggy’s Gift is to visit pediatric cancer units and deliver gift packages that include a super hero hospital gown, a story book, and a plush stuffed dog wearing a super hero cape.  Video consoles and games are also provided for the enjoyment of all the children on the pediatric unit.  A scholarship grant has also been established at Miami Dade College Magic (Miami Animation Gaming International Complex.) The applicant must be a full time student in the video game program, have a 3,0 GPA, qualify for financial aid, and write an essay on anti-cheating in video games.  The grant has been named the Stephen “Miggy” Chavez scholarship grant. In addition, we educate and bring awareness about the dangers of sun exposure, the importance of regular skin examinations, and the urgency of early detection.  We do this by visiting local Boys Scout troops, summer camps, and after school sport programs.  We donate and distribute educational materials and sunscreen dispensers and lotion.  Through our seminars and skin cancer advocating efforts, we hope to make a difference in our community and fulfill Stephen’s desire of spreading the word about the dangers of Melanoma and all Skin Cancers.

Stage Free Melanoma

Picture
Stage FREE Melanoma (SFM) is an early stage non-profit organization, based in San Diego, California, with close ties to the Melanoma community and experience.
After being diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma in 2011 and continuing an ongoing fight with stage 4, Eric Martin felt compelled to address the lack of melanoma education and awareness in his hometown. Over the last 7 years Eric has developed deep ties in the melanoma community and plans on leveraging this network as President of SFM.  Eric believes his story, and others, should be shared to benefit others and not only lived. Eric decided to pull from his network a group of people that share the same passion to deemphasize ‘Stages’, and instead focus on service to others and life.

Melanoma Research Contribution.  Our primary mission is to raise funds to support clinical trials in Southern California conducting cutting edge research.  There are many well funded programs that have amazing success with Melanoma patients.  Sometimes patients are in need of the latest research and trials.  SFM works with this niche Doctor population and strives to provide funding.

Melanoma Awareness. Increase awareness amongst youth and young adults of the pervasiveness and growth of Melanoma among their associated age group, while underscoring the importance of detection and treatment.  By targeting high schools and universities with events, and appealing to them by utilizing social media as a form of communication, SFM hopes to reduce the skyrocketing growth of this form of cancer in Southern California.

Melanoma Detection. SFM does not wish to influence its community by instilling fear, but rather educate people on how preventable this form of cancer can be with effective detection techniques as part of their health care regiment.  Our detection campaigns will not only promote annual screenings, but also provide guidance on ongoing self-detection techniques.

Serve the Southern California Community. We feel Southern California could greatly benefit from SFM, and is in need of additional services and support. We hope to fill this gap, and increase our coverage and service.
