MAC member foundations have been busy these past few months with fundraisers and outreach. Here is a sampling of what we have been doing: Two hundred and fifty supporters of the Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation gathered in September at Garden City Country Club for their 15th Annual Golf Outing, Dinner and Auctions. Twenty-five foursomes were able to compete in a Texas scramble format despite early rain showers. Guest speakers at the dinner included Tim Hawkey, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Area 23, the NYC health advertising company that organized the “Free Killer Tan” campaign and Laura Colwell, also of Area 23. Funds raised will enable the foundation to continue to fund programs to increase awareness for melanoma prevention, provide information and services on skin cancer detection, and support melanoma patients through education on the latest treatments. Moving for Melanoma of Delaware's 8th Annual 5K Run/Walk at the Riverfront in Wilmington, DE attracted more than 900 participants and raised over $76,000. Participants formed fundraising teams and joined in a morning of fun and good times while honoring or remembering their loved ones. Sponsors included DOLE, Pepsi, Johns Hopkins, Horizon, Delmarva Power and many more. The Peggy Spiegler Melanoma Research Foundation held its 7th annual Walk/Run in June with 350 participants and its 4th annual golf outing in August with 116 golfers. Funds raised support educational programs and melanoma conferences at Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania and The Cooper Cancer Center at MD Anderson in Camden. The White Aisle Foundation hosted two “Rebecca’s Birthday” celebrations in September, a cocktail party with silent auction and raffle in Boston and a Fall Harvest Fest in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Both events combined fundraising, sun safety awareness, and fun. In addition to raising funds for the Rebecca Garrison-Sokoloff Melanoma Research Endowment at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center in Boston, attendees picked up sun safety literature and sunscreen samples, bid on items including sun protective hats and cover ups, and were updated on the latest advances in melanoma research.
